Nearly 1,000 fines issued for illegal school parking

Almost 1,000 Penalty Charge Notices have been handed to drivers caught parking illegally outside schools in North East Lincolnshire so far this year.

Twelve schools across the borough are now signed up to an initiative aimed at tackling dangerous driving and parking near school gates.

Since its launch, the council has issued 924 fines to offending motorists.

The scheme, introduced in 2022, involves installing CCTV cameras outside schools as part of a three-step process: a warning letter, followed by monitoring, and then fines for offenders.

A council spokesperson emphasised that parents and drivers are always given prior warning before cameras are switched on.

They continued:

“Drivers caught stopping on the yellow zig zag lines will receive a £70 penalty charge notice. This is reduced to £35 if paid within 14 days. The aim of the scheme is to enforce the keep clear markings restriction more effectively and help change behaviour long-term. Ultimately, it helps to ensure children are arriving and leaving school safely by minimising the risk of nearby traffic and vehicles.”
