New mural celebrates Grimsby’s Viking heritage

A striking new mural has been unveiled on Weelsby Street in Grimsby, celebrating the town’s deep-rooted Viking heritage.

The artwork, created by local artist Kevin Atkins, features a mix of iconic imagery that reflects Grimsby’s historic links to the Vikings. It forms part of Paint the Town Proud — an ongoing project bringing colourful murals to public spaces across the town.

The project has already seen a number of vibrant pieces installed, each showcasing local artistic talent while drawing on the

histories that have shaped Grimsby’s identity.

Gi Grimsby News sat down with artist Kevin Atkins, who told us about his process and the public reaction.

He said : “One of the ideas behind the mural is the town’s Viking origins, with them coming over the Humber Estuary. I wanted to put a twist on it by including the Dock Tower and the fishing industry in the background, to take a slightly different look at the history.

“Some were worried it might get vandalised, but it hasn’t. People seem to appreciate the effort that goes into it. There were a few complaints online about why it was going there, but overall I think the response has been positive.”
