Ideas sought for future of Welholme Galleries

New ideas for the future use of Grimsby’s historic Welholme Galleries are being sought following the news that a buyer has been found.

Ideas put forward so far include creating affordable flats for young families and professionals, a children’s soft play area, a nursery, a wedding venue, or a marketplace with a mix of shops. Other business proposals are also being welcomed.

The anonymous buyer said they are interested in “positive and progressive” suggestions that could give the site a meaningful new role in the town.

Welholme Galleries, formerly the United Reformed Church, has stood empty for several years. North East Lincolnshire Council confirmed earlier this summer that contracts have been exchanged and the sale is expected to complete in December.

The update was welcomed by residents who had become concerned that the building, if left unused, could become a target for antisocial behaviour.

While the final plans for redevelopment remain uncertain, the prospective buyer hopes that community input will help shape a positive future for one of Grimsby’s most notable historic buildings.
