Pop-up library to open as ‘temporary’ replacement for Grimsby Central Library

A pop-up library is set to open in Freshney Place, replacing the now-closed Grimsby Central Library.

The Central Library was forced to close in March after a leak, with further inspections revealing the need for asbestos removal. North East Lincolnshire Council began relocating books soon after, stressing that the move is temporary – though it remains unclear when, or if, the original site will reopen.

The uncertainty has sparked growing concern. A £3.7 million fund once allocated to the library building was instead diverted to the Freshney Place Leisure scheme, and the second phase of a controversial consultation on the future of the borough’s library and archive services has added to local unease.

The council says the consultation findings and proposals for the service will go before councillors in October.

In the meantime, the new pop-up library will be located on Baxtergate inside Freshney Place, next to the Community Diagnostic Centre and opposite Costa Coffee.

An official opening date has yet to be announced.
