Appeal over late-night takeaway turned down

Plans to open a new takeaway and diner in Grimsby have been rejected for a second time after the applicant lost a recent appeal.

The proposal, submitted earlier this year, sought permission to convert a vacant retail unit at the corner of Wellington Street and Stanley Street into a fried chicken shop with indoor seating.

The plans faced a number of objections from locals, who raised concerns about the potential for anti-social behaviour, parking problems, and other issues linked to late-night trading.

However, the most significant issue was the site’s proximity to Havelock Academy. National planning policy advises councils to refuse applications for hot food takeaways within walking distance of schools and other places where children gather. In this case, a school, nursery, park and youth centre all fall within 400 metres of the site.

Had the proposal been approved, the shop would have created one part-time and two full-time jobs, with opening hours from 12pm to 11pm daily, and until 3am on Fridays and Saturdays.
