‘No plans’ for direct rail service to London

The Department for Transport has confirmed there are no current plans for a direct rail service between Cleethorpes and London.

MPs and campaigners have been calling for the service to return for more than a decade, after it was axed.

It had been understood that LNER intended to launch the route in December 2024, running through Grimsby, Lincoln and Market Rasen. Grand Central had also expressed interest. However, the proposals were thrown into doubt when they failed to appear in the latest timetables, citing unspecified “infrastructure issues.”

Now, ahead of the next timetable publication in December 2025, the Department has confirmed the service will not go ahead anytime soon.

A spokesperson said: “We currently have no plans to introduce direct services from Cleethorpes and Grimsby to London, but from December 2025, East Midlands Railway will improve connections via Lincoln to strengthen links with the capital.”
