Green light for plans to convert Humberston church

Plans to convert a former church in Humberston into a residential property have been approved.

The former Humberston Methodist Church, located on Humberston Avenue since 1907, has been vacant for several years following a decline in congregation numbers. A previous proposal to redevelop the site did not go ahead, paving the way for a fresh application.

The approved plans will see the 1,010-square-metre site transformed into a home featuring an extension, four bedrooms, five bathrooms, a green roof, and a workshop.

The proposal has largely been welcomed, with neighbouring residents and heritage groups expressing support—on the condition that the property is occupied by a single family rather than used as a house in multiple occupation (HMO), and that sufficient parking is provided.

As part of the approval a condition has been imposed preventing any construction work from taking place during the bird-nesting season, with developers also required to install at least one bat box, either on the building itself or on one of the surrounding trees.
