North East Lincolnshire Council (NELC) says it will pursue “the appropriate legal recourse” over the Corporation Bridge project if deemed necessary.
NELC ended its contract with Spencer Group in May 2025 after more than two years of work, citing “unacceptable” delays and stating that appointing a new contractor was the quickest and most efficient way to ensure completion. At the time, a spokesperson for the contractor told Gi Grimsby News they were “baffled and disappointed” by the decision, asserting that any additional work required on the project was unforeseen and beyond their control.
The restoration, originally expected to take 11 months at a cost of around £5 million, has now stretched beyond two and a half years and is believed to have exceeded its budget.
Work came to a standstill for several months after the contract was terminated, before specialist firm Taziker was appointed to take over.
Gi Grimsby News previously asked the council whether it was pursuing legal action, but the authority declined to comment. Since then, NELC has confirmed it has employed experts to survey the work completed to date, with early indications suggesting there are “defects that require remediation.” The authority added that it is “committed to pursuing the appropriate legal recourse” if necessary.
The Spencer Group has been contacted for comment but has not yet responded.
