Work has begun to transform a unit once home to one of Grimsby’s longest-standing businesses.
Middleton’s Glass Ltd operated on Wellington Street for almost a century before closing in 2022. Now the property is set to be brought back into use as a retail unit and hand car wash after planning permission was granted to repurpose the building and its adjoining car park.
Construction work has now begun, including the installation of canopies, wash bays, drainage, high fencing and gates, along with staff and waiting areas and the resurfacing of the existing car park. It is understood the building will be divided into two separate sections for different uses.
Revised plans were approved earlier this year following initial concerns from residents about the development’s potential impact on local traffic. An updated planning statement confirmed there will be no more than four staff members on site at any one time, with one parking space reserved for staff and five spaces for customers or deliveries.
The site is expected to handle 20 to 25 vehicles per day, arriving at roughly 15-minute intervals during peak periods.
