Seven sentenced after CCTV catches criminals in the act

Two people have been jailed for their crimes after they were caught on camera by North East Lincolnshire Council’s (NELC) CCTV system.

Five other people were also prosecuted, and some handed fines of up to £5000. Among the crimes of those responsible are the theft of a vehicle to assault by beating.

The £2.25 million security system was introduced into Grimsby Town Centre in 2023 and has seen a number of criminals captured in partnership with Humberside Police.

A spokesperson for NELC explained: “Ultimately, this partnership working is aiming to create a safer borough with a joined up approach that works effectively to tackling crime and Anti-Social Behaviour.

“Between 2023 and 2025, crime reduced by 5% in the town centre over the with huge reductions in Anti-Social Behaviour and alcohol related crimes, thanks to the joined up approach from the Council and Police.

Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB) reduced by 14%; alcohol related ASB was down by 51%. Additionally, violence leading to injury has reduced by 23% and bike thefts by over 45%.

“The system and close working relationship with Humberside Police ensures that those who commit crimes continue to be brought to justice.“

We are committed to doing everything we can to help the people who live and work in North East Lincolnshire and we have a zero-tolerance policy to people who challenge that. We will continue to work alongside organisations like Humberside Police as we strive to improve the area we call our home.”

“The success is in the results and convictions we’ve seen over the last few months alone, and working alongside the local council as a part of OpMastery our activity has included increasing police patrols of officers in uniform and plain clothes, deploying the proactive drugs detection dog to proactively target offending, and conducting days of action with our multi-agency colleagues to proactively tackle any reports and concerns from the community.

“Our work does not stop here, and we will continue to collaborate with partners and local community groups to bring all agencies together with one aim to improve the lives of the community. We encourage you to speak to us when you see us out and about or call us on our non-emergency number 101 to let us know about anything that is concerning you.”
