The first seal pup of the season has been born at Donna Nook nature reserve, the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust has confirmed.
Each year from October through December, thousands of grey seals gather along the Lincolnshire coast to give birth near the sand dunes, drawing visitors from across the country eager to witness the spectacle.
This new arrival marks the start of another busy season for the reserve, with thousands more pups expected to follow in the coming weeks. Last year’s first birth took place on 29 October, while 2024 saw a total of 1,649 pups recorded — a noticeable drop compared to previous years.
The Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust continues to manage the site carefully to ensure the seals and their pups are protected, while also welcoming visitors to enjoy the heartwarming sight responsibly.
A spokesperson for the organisation wrote: “The first grey seal pup of the season has been born, but is not within sight of the viewing area. This is a week earlier than last year. There are a few adult seals on the beach but none close.”
