Memorial plaques to be relocated ahead of Pier Gardens refurb

Memorial plaques in Cleethorpes’ Pier Gardens will be relocated ahead of a major redevelopment, North East Lincolnshire Council (NELC) has stated.

The refurbishment forms part of the £18.4 million improvement plans across the resort and is due to begin this winter. In preparation, the plaques – many of which are located on benches in the area – will be removed in early November and reinstated in their new locations before Remembrance weekend.

The council said it has been working with owners of the plaques in the gardens to agree on suitable relocation arrangements. While many have already been contacted, NELC is appealing for anyone who owns a plaque but has not yet been reached to get in touch, as it does not hold records for all owners.

Councillor Henry Hudson, Cabinet member for the environment at NELC, said: “We know memorial plaques mean a lot to people, and we’d like to see owners come forward and have a chat about the next steps. We have various different options that people can choose from, but at this stage, we just need to identify who owns what.”

Anyone who owns a plaque can contact the council’s bereavement team on 01472 324869.
