Grimsby Town’s Carabao Cup journey came to an end tonight as Premier League side Brentford secured a 5-0 victory under the lights at Blundell Park.
The Mariners had earned their place in the fourth round after a memorable run that saw them defeat higher-league opposition along the way. But despite a spirited performance in front of a sell-out crowd, the visitors’ quality ultimately prevailed.
Brentford took control in the first half, capitalising on their chances to seal the win and book their place in the quarter-finals.
While the defeat brings Grimsby’s Carabao Cup run to a close, the Mariners will quickly turn their attention to the FA Cup, with a home tie against Ebbsfleet United on Saturday 1 November.
