Work underway at factory site 18 years after fire – see photos from the blaze

Construction work is taking place at the site of the former Birds Eye factory on Ladysmith Road in Grimsby, prompting memories of the devastating fire that destroyed the site in 2007.

The blaze, which broke out on the evening of September 12, sent plumes of smoke visible for miles and forced nearby residents to evacuate their homes. Firefighters battled the flames for more than six hours.

The factory had closed two years earlier in 2005, resulting in the loss of 650 jobs. At the time of the fire, two teenagers were arrested in connection with the incident, though no charges were ultimately brought.

The remains of the facility were ultimately demolished and plans for housing and a 70-bed care home on the site were approved.

As work on the land progresses, the site’s transformation marks the end of an era for a location that played a significant role in Grimsby’s industrial past.
