Cleethorpes is set to benefit from a brand-new rail route next month as part of major timetable changes being introduced along the East Coast.
A revised timetable from East Midlands Railway will see the creation of a new route running from Matlock in Derbyshire, through Nottingham and Lincoln, to Cleethorpes. The service, which will go live from Sunday 14 December 2025, is one of several changes aiming to strengthen transport links across the region, support tourism, and open up new leisure travel opportunities between the East Midlands and the Lincolnshire coast.
Extra trains will also serve Grimsby Docks and New Clee, improving local connectivity. The Barton-on-Humber service will also benefit from a standard hourly timetable, designed to better connect with TransPennine Express services at Habrough.
To improve reliability, off-peak stops at New Clee and Grimsby Docks will transfer from the Barton service to the new Nottingham route. Some early and late trains will also be retimed to avoid disruption from engineering works. In addition, EMR will increase its trains between Cleethorpes and Nottingham by five per day, Monday to Saturday, providing a more regular two-hourly service.
These updates form part of the biggest timetable change on the East Coast Main Line in over a decade, backed by £4 billion of investment. The overhaul is expected to deliver more trains, thousands of extra seats, and faster, more reliable journeys for passengers across the network.
