Today, Wednesday 3 December, is International Disability Awareness Day, and volunteers, leaders and members from the local branch of Scope were out in force in Grimsby town centre, raising awareness of their work and collecting donations.
Scope is a national charity that provides support, information and advice to around a quarter of a million disabled people and their families. Its mission is to ensure disabled people have the same opportunities as everyone else.
Today the team rallied to hand out leaflets highlighting the many volunteering opportunities available and how rewarding the experience can be.
Volunteer Kim said the experience has “changed my life”. She encouraged anyone interested to enquire, explaining that volunteers can get involved in a variety of roles, from helping in the Scope shop and supporting disabled people to campaigning, fundraising, or assisting with admin.
Shop manager Julie added, “We’re a charity for awareness about disability, for equality, and for stopping the employability gap.”
