Doctors to strike days before Christmas

Industrial action at local hospitals set to run into Christmas week will go ahead, it has been confirmed.

The strike, being carried out by resident doctors — formerly known as junior doctors — will begin on Wednesday 17 December and run until Monday 22 December, just days before Christmas.

The British Medical Association announced the update following an indicative poll of its members.

Hundreds of doctors across the country, including many in North East Lincolnshire and North Lincolnshire, are expected to walk out of local hospitals for five days during one of the busiest periods of the year, with flu-related admissions on the rise.

A spokesperson for Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital and Scunthorpe General Hospital, said: “As with previous strikes we are doing our best to keep as many services running as possible. Our priority will be to preserve urgent and emergency care – if we need to reschedule your planned appointment as a result of the strikes we will be in touch shortly. Apologies for any inconvenience caused.”
