North East Lincolnshire Council has shared an update on when improvements, including the installation of a new fountain, will be carried out at Sidney Park.
The Cleethorpes park has become a hotspot for fly-tipping and incidents involving injured wildlife. At present, the pond does not have a fountain, allowing debris and rubbish to collect around the edges and creating a number of hazards.
Concerns have also been raised about water quality, with poor oxygen levels and a build-up of dirt impacting local wildlife. On one occasion, North East Lincolnshire Council removed more than a tonne of waste from the pond. There have also been repeated reports of dead fish, as well as ducks and other birds becoming trapped in discarded fishing lines and hooks.
However, the council has now confirmed plans to install a fountain in the new year following a campaign by local councillors. Councillors are also continuing to push for new CCTV to be installed in the area to deter fly-tipping and help the council take action against offenders.
It is hoped the improvements will boost the health of the pond, better support wildlife and fish, and make the park a more attractive space.
A North East Lincolnshire Council spokesperson said: “The Council are planning to install the fountain in the New Year, weather permitting, and are thrilled to be able to upgrade one of the many open spaces enjoyed by the community.”
