Council ‘fully prepared’ for wintry conditions

North East Lincolnshire Council says that it is fully prepared for the wintry conditions now facing Grimsby, with gritters at the ready.

The council says that their highways team are “fully prepared” with their gritters “ready to respond to wintery conditions” through preventative gritting when frost, ice or snowfall is forecast, with the team continuing to monitor weather updates “around the clock”.

The Met Office currently forecasts temperature lows of -4° today, and 0° tomorrow, with a yellow snow and ice warning in place until 11am on Tuesday.

With the gritters covering more than 350km of A and B roads across the borough, including bus and commuter routes, roads leading to hospitals, ambulance stations, fire stations, bus depots and roads serving shopping centres, the Council is further urging drivers to be careful.

They say that motorists should:

  • Check their screen wash, tyres and anti-freeze
  • Keep de-icer, warm clothing, food and water in their car
  • Always check the weather before travelling

And for anyone travelling in snowy or icy conditions, they should:

  • Slow down and increase their stopping distance as it could take up to ten times longer to stop
  • Avoid harsh braking, sharp steering, and sudden acceleration
  • Keep their fuel topped up and windows clear
  • Use dipped headlights to improve visibility
  • Watch out for hidden icy patches, especially under bridges

The authority is also asking for drivers to pull over safely if a gritter is behind them, or park close to the kerb or on their driveway to allow gritters to pass when they are not using their vehicle.
