Controversial village housing scheme poised for approval

A 42-strong housing development has been recommended for development by North East Lincolnshire Council’s planning team.

The 2.26-hectare site, based on a piece of land just off from Waltham Road in Barnoldby Le Beck, would see 42 homes erected on an arable field currently used for grass production but has seen numerous objections from both neighbours and local councils.

The development has been going through the planning process since June 2025 and was brought before the council following objections from both Waltham and Barnoldby Le Beck Parish Councils on the grounds that the development would bridge the two settlements closer together and would compromise the green belt currently separating them.

Furthermore, nearly 20 neighbours have objected to the development for numerous reasons, including traffic generation and impacts on highway safety, the lack of capacity within local services, the scale and amount of development, and the lack of need for additional housing in the area, as well as the risk of flooding and impact on biodiversity and ecology.

One neighbour said in an objection: “Our village is already experiencing significant strain from the volume of recent developments. The cumulative impact of ongoing and proposed construction is having a serious and unsustainable effect on our community and local infrastructure.

“The area has seen a disproportionate number of new housing developments in recent years. This is eroding the rural character of the village and putting unsustainable pressure on local resources.

“There is currently no primary or secondary school within adequate distance to serve the growing number of families moving into the area. Similarly, there are insufficient shops and local amenities to meet the needs of the existing population, let alone additional residents.”

However, the council’s planning team state that “it is considered that, in principle, the site could be delivered without having a detrimental impact on the neighbours’ residential amenities” and that when it comes to the parish council’s objections to the gap between Barnoldby le Beck and Waltham, the space is “not designated” as a “strategic gap”.

The planning officer further outlines that the development “would not harm the area character or residential amenity and is acceptable under all other planning conditions.”

The decision to approve or reject the development is due to be determined at the next North East Lincolnshire Council planning committee on Wednesday 7 January.
