Coastguard called to youths ‘putting themselves at risk’ in rough waves

The Coastguard has issued a warning after being called to reports of two youths “putting themselves at risk” in rough sea conditions at Cleethorpes.

Crews were alerted on Thursday 8 January, to concerns that two youths were dodging waves on the slipway on the North Promenade. When teams arrived, it was initially unclear whether the pair had walked away or been swept into the water by waves breaking over the sea wall, prompting an immediate search of the area.

The search proved negative and discussions were held about deploying a Cleethorpes RNLI lifeboat and Coastguard Rescue Helicopter 912. The incident was later resolved when the two teenagers — a 17-year-old male and an 18-year-old female — were located after arriving back at the scene in a private vehicle.

They were given a stern warning about the dangers of their actions, which coastguards said had the potential to put not only their own lives at risk, but also those of emergency services involved in the response.

A spokesperson for HM Coastguard said: “We understand that watching waves crash over the sea wall can be exciting, and many people enjoy taking photographs. We do not wish to spoil anyone’s enjoyment; however, please do not put your life or the lives of others at risk for the sake of a photograph or trying to dodge the waves. We would like to thank the first informant for making the call, and we are pleased that the incident concluded safely.”
