A ‘violent’ man who trapped and raped a woman has been jailed for 16 years.

Malik Shahzad, 46, of Berkeley Street in Scunthorpe denied all offences he was charged with at Grimsby Crown Court but was found guilty of rape, false imprisonment and assault following a trial which concluded on Wednesday 19 November 2025.

Now, he has been sentenced to 16 years in prison and has been handed a restraining order for life following a sentencing appearance at Grimsby Crown Court on Friday 16 January.

Officers first became aware of Shahzad after they received a report on Wednesday 7 July 2021, at around 6:50AM from a woman disclosing that she had been locked in an address overnight down Berkeley Street in Scunthorpe and raped by a man for hours.

Officers then immediately deployed to the address and arrested Shahzad on suspicion of rape and false imprisonment.

During the following investigation, the woman informed officers that she tried to leave the address throughout the night but was followed by Shahzad, who then grabbed her by the neck and pinned her down.

On one occasion, the woman attempted to call the police using her phone, but Shahzad grabbed her phone and threw it while continuing to assault her.

Shahzad maintained his innocence when being questioned by detectives, saying that it was consensual and that the victim was lying.

Detective Constable Becky McInnis, who led the investigation, said: “Shahzad is a violent rapist who subjected a woman to abhorrent levels of abuse for hours before she escaped his home.

“Reporting a crime of this nature is never easy, and I would like to commend the victim for her bravery in coming forward and reporting this to the police, it is because of her courage that Shahzad will no longer be able to subject anyone else to this level of violence.

“We take all reports of rape and other sexual offences extremely seriously, and we will continue to seek justice for those who have suffered at the hands of exploitative predators.

“Our specialist trained officers work closely with partnering agencies across the region to support victims and survivors, as well as working hard to prevent further incidents by putting perpetrators before the courts.

“When you are ready, we encourage you to tell someone. Tell a trusted adult or friend, reach out to specialist support agencies, and tell us. We will always do everything we can to hold those accountable for such vile crimes.

“Anyone who suspects crimes of this nature are taking place, please report it to us via our non-emergency number 101. Always call 999 in an emergency.”
