Views are being sought on expansions to a bus lane that is used by 88,000 passengers a year in Grimsby into Cleethorpes.
As part of the Bus Service Improvement Plan, North East Lincolnshire Council is considering an extension of the Cleethorpe Road bus lane along the eastbound carriageway between the junctions of Freeman Street and Victor Street.
Around 11 buses use this bus lane an hour, carrying over 88,000 passengers a year from Grimsby into Cleethorpes.
Now the council wants to make some changes to “help improve traffic flow to keep the borough moving.”
They are proposing that the bus lane start after Tomline Street to keep the off-carriageway parking bays between Freeman Street and Tomline Street, with the bus lane being active between the hours of 4:30PM and 6:30PM from Monday to Saturday.
This means that only authorised vehicles, such as buses, can drive within the bus lane during these hours.
They also propose that there is a double yellow line restriction on Nacton Street and within the bus lane from Tomline Street to Levington Street.
The plans also include changes to nearby car parks, such as Orwell Street providing two hours of free parking so visitors can still park for free, and the addition of CCTV cameras and better street lighting for Strand Street, as well as free all-day parking.
However, business owners have raised concerns about the plans and how they would affect their businesses due to the lack of frontal parking for their stores, meaning deliveries cannot be taken.
A petition has been launched, and campaigners have canvassed the street with posters opposing the plans.
If the bus lane plans are rejected, other elements such as the parking arrangements would be rejected too.
To give views, the Council is asking residents to visit this page by Wednesday 18 February.
