Lighting review after safety concerns at Fuller Street Bridge

A Cleethorpes bridge is set to receive new warning signs and a review of its lighting after a petition signed by more than 200 people called for safety improvements.

The petition was launched following safety concerns at Fuller Street Bridge after a reported rape in 2025. In response, North East Lincolnshire Council (NELC) said it would assess existing lighting levels to determine whether improvements could be made, but stated that installing new lighting was “unlikely”.

NELC has approved new signage to alert people that the area is unlit. However, a council report said the “levels of investment” required for bridge lighting and CCTV would be “disproportionate to the recorded crime levels”.

A petition, which called for improved lighting around the North Wall area, was set up last year by Melanie Onn, the MP for Great Grimsby and Cleethorpes.

Speaking at the time, she said numerous residents had contacted her with concerns, explaining that many had raised “issues about the lack of safety measures, in particular lighting, along the pathway on the North Wall.”

Ms Onn added: “I’m working with Sidney Sussex councillors, the local authority, and police to try to improve those safety measures and make it much more safe and secure for everybody who is using this lovely bit of outdoor space.”

NELC said the new signs would warn of the risks of using the route, citing “unlit, uneven ground” and the additional tidal dangers associated with the sea wall. It will also advise people to use the better-lit and more accessible Suggitt’s Lane bridge instead.

The signage is expected to be installed within the next three months.
