Tributes pour in for Grimsby Town legend Roly Godfrey

Hundreds of tributes have poured in following the sad death of the much-loved Grimsby Town Football Club legend, Roly Godfrey.

Roly was a well-known local landlord, a passionate supporter of the Mariners and the man behind early video footage of the club from the 1980s and 90s.

He sadly passed away on Easter Sunday aged 84.

Roly, along with cameraman Dick Dunnett, and later Martin Wilson, Graham Shearsmith and John Moore, is well known for having travelled the length and breadth of the country filming games and producing the end of season highlights tapes which were so popular with fans.

Following the news, many including Grimsby Town Football Club themselves took to social media to share their tributes and memories of Roly.

Writing on X, John Tondeur, another well-known Grimsby Town icon, said: “So sorry to hear this. Roly was a legend both at GTFC and in the pubs and clubs of Grimsby and Cleethorpes. Some legendary nights in JDs!! Condolences to the family.”

One person wrote: “Loved his commentary, sad to hear this. GTFC legend.”

“A Grimsby Legend who will be greatly missed. Our condolences and love to Roly’s family and many friends.,” added another.

Recalling fond memories, another X user spoke of the “wonderful commentary on good times and bad,” with another mentioning the “fabulous commentary and punditry over the years,”
