Deer ‘safe and resting’ after Cleethorpes beach rescue

A deer which was rescued by a paddle boarder on Cleethorpes Beach this morning, Saturday 27 April, is ‘in good condition and resting’ according to Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue.

Footage emerged earlier today showing the moment the exhausted animal was carried from the water, after it was chased towards an incoming tide by a dog.

A spokesperson for Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue told Gi Grimsby News that volunteers had attended the scene, but the deer had already left the area.

They said: “Volunteers attended reports of an exhausted deer rescued by a member of the public this morning, reports suggest that it was chased by a dog near Humberston Fitties into the tide.

“Deer are incredibly good swimmers, but do suffer from post capture myopathy if they get too stressed, the reports of being chased, plus the energy needed to swim quickly, likely caused the deer to become exhausted.

“The deer was reported to us after the rescue by the member of public and on our arrival shortly afterwards, the deer had already left the area.“

The deer was located on a second visit, with rescue volunteers confirming the deer is “in good condition and is keeping low to rest.”
