Sewage warning issued for local beaches

An alert has been issued for two beaches in North East Lincolnshire as part of a sewage pollution alert following heavy rainfall over the weekend.

According to reports heavy rainfall has caused sewers and sewage pipes to overflow and spill into the water.

Sadly, the alert impacts beaches at both Cleethorpes and Humberston Fitties.

A warning issued by Surfers against Sewage earlier today for both locations reads: “Storm sewage has been discharged from a sewer overflow in this location within the past 48 hours.”

Since then, Surfers against Sewage have deemed waters near the Humberston Fitties as safe.

Last year saw a record number of sewage pollution alerts issued for waters surrounding Cleethorpes beach, with 36 alerts issued for 2023 so far.

Bathers have repeatedly been warned against swimming in the water after periods of heavy rainfall, which causes sewers and sewage pipes to overflow and spill into the water, making it ‘unsuitable’ and unsafe for swimmers.
