Two dead after major coastal search

Two people have tragically died and another remains missing following a major search and rescue operation off the East Yorkshire coast.

One of those who died has been confirmed as a 67-year-old man. The age and gender of the second person have not yet been confirmed. Humberside Police said the circumstances surrounding the deaths are not believed to be suspicious.

The search has now resumed for one remaining missing person who entered the water at Withernsea. The incident was first reported at 3.10pm on Friday 2 January, prompting a large-scale response involving around 100 personnel from multiple emergency services across the Humber and Yorkshire regions.

A police spokesperson said: “Residents will continue to see an increased police presence in and around the area as the search continues. We continue to ask that people avoid the area to allow emergency services to work efficiently and safely.”
