Work starts to demolish Abbey Walk car park

The demolition of Abbey Walk car park has officially begun, clearing the way for a new transport hub — but with no firm commitment in place to save the artworks embedded in the structure.

The multi-storey car park was “temporarily” closed in May 2024 due to structural concerns, before a decision was taken to permanently shut and demolish the site as part of wider regeneration plans. These plans include the creation of a new transport hub and a ground-level car park.

The work, which is expected to take around 12 weeks, marks the end of a prominent town centre landmark.

North East Lincolnshire Council previously told Gi Grimsby News that the reliefs were cast in situ, with metal bars running through them, making removal extremely challenging.

The council added that contractors will assess whether any of the original artworks can be saved once demolition work is underway.
